At the beginning of the twentieth century –around 1903- Pantelis Toutountzis moved to Athens from the Ottoman occupied Kastoria: a centuries’ old center of fur production which provided furs from Constantinople to Vienna. He carried with him all the tradition, experience and craftsmanship of his home town.
By 1910 Toutountzis Furs was a well-established firm in the center of Athens.
The founder passed on his trade and passion for fur to his daughters and worked with them till his death. Thus, through the roaring twenties, the Great Depression and the difficult years after WWII and the Civil war Maison Toutountzis, continued to offer its services to the Athenian society; politician’s wives, opera stars, couture houses and many more.
In the early sixties the founder’s grandson Athanassios Zacharias took over the business.
Having studied fur design in Paris and after having worked in famous ateliers there, he transferred all his rich knowledge, vast know-how, talent, passion and love for fur to the family firm.
Today, Toutountzis Furs, is believed to be the only house with such a long and continuous presence in the field of fur fashion in Athens.
It has remained a family business. At its head is now Ioli-Theodoti Zacharia, the fourth generation of owners who has inherited all the knowledge gained by her predecessors.
Fur no longer has to be only a luxury garment and has followed the modern woman in her everyday life: at work, going out or on her travels. It has acquired modern design, colour, lightness and practicality, offering-above all-warmth, comfort and style. It ranges from streetwear and prêt-à-porter to haute couture.
